See inside a rare surviving Georgian Bath House, and find out about the medicinal plants in our Physic Garden.

The listed buildings on our site comprise a late-Georgian Bath House and a neoclassical garden shelter of the same period. Built by the owners of a nearby house, the Bath House is a rare survivor of the 18th and 19th-century passion for health-giving cold-water bathing. It contains a private plunge pool in the basement and an upstairs warming room. The garden shelter reflects a contemporary fashion in garden design - a classical architectural feature set within an idyllic landscape view. Following restoration of the buildings we have created a garden in the grounds to inspire interest in the fascinating stories of plants and their place in our history. The Physic Garden contains a range of plants that have been used throughout history, both in medicine and in the textile industry. It creates a green haven close to the centre of town, with woodland and wildlife areas as well as cultivated borders and lawns. A Medical Herbalist representing the Herb Society will lead garden tours, and there will be plants, refreshments and other items on sale. There will be guided tours of the Bath House and Garden Shelter throughout the day. Children can find out about the garden by following the Congleton Museum Heritage Trail - leaflets will be available.

Accessibility details

We regret that the nature of the site restricts access for some people, though it is possible to get a long view of the garden from the top of the site. The top entrance gate is more easily accessed via Lowe Avenue, for those with limited mobility. The site is sloping and terraced, with mostly grass paths, so flat and weather-appropriate shoes are advisable. There is a small wildlife pond on site and children must be supervised at all times. Well behaved dogs are welcome. Please note also that there are no public toilets on our site.
