The Ballroom, Thorngate Halls, Bury Road, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 3PX

  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

Be transported back to the time of silent films with the history and sound of this unique Compton Cinema Organ, usually hidden away behind the stage!

The Compton Cinema Organ has been in the Ballroom at Thorngate Hall since 1981 but was originally built to provide music and sound effects for Silent Films. Built in 1934, and having not been modified since it is now the last of its type still surviving in original working order AND concert playable condition!

A short talk will inform you of the history of this organ, now 90 years old, before a chance to see the pipes in the two organ lofts, then enjoy a short recital of music to show the versatility of the organ when it used to accompany Silent Film. Perhaps even tinkle the keys yourself...
