St John's Church lies in the heart of panoramic Bilsdale - the most westerly of the steep sided dales of the North York Moors. It is a listed building designed by the well-known 19th century architect Temple Moore and was consecrated in 1896.

The church stands proudly on the East side of the dale overlooking the ancient Helmsley to Stokesley 'Drovers Road', now the B1257. Temple Moore was famous for his series of fine Gothic Revival churches built between 1890 - 1917. The church's foundation stone was laid in 1893 by the Earl of Feversham, whose family still live at nearby Duncombe Park. It is the youngest and largest of the five churches forming the Parish of Upper Ryedale. It is a festival church and has occasional art exhibitions. The Church of St John the Evangelist has a stunning stained glass East window depicting the crucifixion.

This church will be exhibiting some beautiful photographs of family life in Bilsdale over the years by local photographer Keith Parcell. You will hear more about Keith’s work during this next year since we are in discussion with him about collaborating on a book on our churches in the parish of Upper Ryedale.
