Church of Our Lady and St Alphege, Bath

Admirers of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott's work (such as Liverpool Cathedral, Battersea Power Station, the red telephone-box) will see his characteristic combination of traditonal design (in this the early Christian basilica), modern techniques (such as the unique ruboleum floor with Cosmatesque 12-13th-century patterns), and an arts-and-crafts attention to detail (such as ironwork and wood). The church has been restored in preparation for its centenary in 2029. Directions:

There is limited car parking outside or in the streets around the church. A no 8 bus from the central station in Bath next to Bath Spa Railway Station will take you almost to the end of the road (ask driver) at Second Avenue. There are frequent buses (4, 4a, 4b, 522, 172, 173, 174) from the Bus Station to Bear Flat, from where you cross to Bloomfield Avenue, then Oldfield Road and left for some 200 yards, where the turn-off to St Alphege Church is signed.
