Church Gate: Leicester’s forgotten quarter

East Bond Street, Leicester, Leicestershire, LE1 4SX

  • 11 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking preferred

Find out about Church Gate's fascinating past. A short talk by Dr Jonathan Kewley, Architectural Investigator at Historic England.

Dr Kewley has undertaken detailed research into the buildings of Church Gate, and this is a one off opportunity to hear him talk about the stories he has unearthed from the area's recent and distant past.

Hear about coaching inns and cowkeepers, archery butts and early motor garages, and the people of Leicester who lived and worked in this distinct quarter of the city, a big contrast to other, grander and less engaging streets around.

This project is supported by Historic England and Leicester City Council as part of the High Street Heritage Action Zone which aimed to help revitalise Church Gate and Granby Street Conservation Areas between March 2020 and 2024. Join us for this short talk in the magnificent Great Meeting Unitarian Chapel.
