Catacomb tours and guided walks @ York Cemetery
The Gatehouse, Cemetery Road, York, North Yorkshire, YO10 5AJ
Founded in 1837, York Cemetery encompasses 24 acres and is cared for by York Cemetery Trust. It is recognised as a place of significant historical importance. The peace and tranquillity of this green oasis with its butterfly walk, woodland, pond, herb garden, rockery, and much more, provides an important haven for wildlife and visitors.
Join us for a tour of the Catacombs, beneath the neoclassical chapel. Learn about the few people interred here and why it fell out of favour. Every 30 minutes from 12noon to 3pm. Also enjoy a short talk and tour of some of the special areas of the cemetery, hearing about York’s social heritage at 1pm and 2pm.

Catacombs: Access to the catacombs is down a steep set of stone stairs without a handrail. It is not accessible to those using a wheelchair or pushchair. The guided walk: The walk is along uneven and grass paths, but is wheelchair and pushchair accessible.
This event is organised by the Friends of York Cemetery. The Friends are a voluntary organisation supporting York Cemetery Trust. We raise money through a programme of walks and other events, private tours and talks, grant applications and donations. The Friends also organise a monthly gardening 'task day' where volunteers come together to tackle gardening tasks within the grounds. All are welcome to join in, simply come along for 10am on the first Saturday of every month. It's a fun way to get some exercise, and make a difference.
