Castle Hill Heritage Day Walk

Castle Hill, Hillside, Almondbury, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, HD4 6TA

  • 15 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

This walk will cover the known development and use of the monument from the Mesolithic to Modern Times.

Participants will follow a circular route, which follows purpose-built footpaths. Reference will be made to the scheduled Bronze/Iron-Age hillfort, 12th Century motte-and-bailey castle, grade II listed Victoria Tower, and the site of a deserted Medieval village.

The Guide will explore and explain the earthworks, look at the findings from previous and recent archaeological excavations, show locations and explain the uses of the now-demolished buildings on the hill.

Conditions are dependent on the weather, but cars may be parked on the top of the hill. There is no cover, and sun protection may be needed. Since the site is exposed to the elements, visitors should dress accordingly. Walking shoes or strong trainers are advised. There are no nearby toilets unless you wish to visit nearby settlements.
