Carshalton Water Tower, West Street, Carshalton, Greater London, SM5 2PT

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person

Visitors will be able to visit the listed early 18th century Water Tower, with its suite of rooms: Orangery, Saloon, Pump Chamber and early Delft tiled Bathroom, and take the garden tours to the Hermitage in the mid-18th century landscaped garden.

The Water Tower was built for Sir John Fellowes as a pleasure pavilion in his landscaped garden, designed by Charles Bridgeman. The tank at the top of the tower fed garden fountains and the taps in his late-17th century villa, Carshalton House. This is now part of St Philomena’s Catholic High School for girls.

The Landscape pleasure grounds were redesigned in the mid-18th century. The canal was developed into a kidney-shaped lake with the Water Tower, the Hermitage and the new Sham Bridge on its banks. However, there are still details of Bridgeman's design to be seen.
