The Precincts, Canterbury Cathedral, Canterbury, Kent, CT1 2EH

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

A guided tour of Canterbury Cathedral’s outside spaces including the Great Cloister, Chapter House and monastery ruins, learning about the earliest inhabitants of the site, the monks, and how the public gardens were created and are cared for today.

Canterbury Cathedral’s public gardens include the historic Herb Garden, the peaceful Friends’ Garden and the atmospheric Memorial Garden, containing pieces of modern sculpture and poetry. Learn more about how these gardens were created on this walking tour around the outside areas of the Cathedral and discover how our gardeners care for the Cathedral’s green spaces today, always with a strong emphasis on sustainability.

As you make your way around you will find evidence of the site’s former use as a monastery for the Benedictine monks who lived on site during the Middle Ages, and uncover more about their lives and daily routine. You will learn about the Chapter House and how it was used for instruction and day-to-day planning, discover the Great Cloister, where the monks studied and the Infirmary ruins where the monks were cared for when sick. Along the way, you will uncover medieval attitudes to health, diet and even hygiene among traces of the past that can still be seen today.
