Canterbury Cathedral Memorial Garden & Bastion Chapel Tour

The Precincts, Canterbury Cathedral, Canterbury, Kent, CT1 2EH

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

A guided tour of Canterbury Cathedral’s Memorial Garden, including a rare opportunity to visit the tiny medieval Bastion Chapel set in the city walls.

Once the Canons’ Bowling Green, Canterbury Cathedral’s Memorial Garden was created after WWI and is notable for containing the ‘County of Kent War Memorial Cross’ which stands as a memorial to the people of Kent killed in the First World War. Discover the fascinating story of the garden’s creation and the links with Ypres established following WWI and learn how the Memorial Cross, designed by Sir Herbert Baker, was damaged in the air raids of the Baedecker Blitz during WWII. The garden is now a modern Garden of Remembrance and sculptures can be found around the flower beds, each reflecting the theme of loss and remembrance. The garden is also notable for its extensive planting and for offering picturesque views of the Cathedral beyond.

The tour includes the chance to visit the Bastion Chapel. Once used as a guard house, this tiny chapel forms part of the medieval city walls. Learn about the chapel's history and enjoy the opportunity to explore inside on this special tour.
