Broomhill - Taptonville Road Local History Walk
1 Taptonville Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S10 5BQ
Taptonville Road was created at the time the suburb of Broomhill was starting to expand away from its origin - Broomhill House. Properties were being developed along the Glossop (turnpike) Road, which made accessibility to them much easier, especially after the buses and trams came out here from the town centre. Houses here were designed for the up and coming middle classes, as evidenced by the new owners and residents. It was nearer to town than Endcliffe Crescent (begun late 1820s), but pre-dates the mansions of Ranmoor which came into being in the 1860s. The original houses we shall see have changed little over the intervening years, with some being Listed properties. Most of the properties are still in private ownership with the notable exception of no. 10 which is the home of the much-loved Broomhill Community Library. We shall also walk around the hidden gem of Taptonville Crescent, and pause to consider why it came into being.

The road goes uphill and is quite steep. Taptonville Crescent in particular is uneven under foot. The pavements are not all at one level and driveways are below the level of the pavements. Care must be taken whilst walking. Walkers may call in at Broomhill Community Library at the end of the walk for a cup of tea/coffee.
