Taptonville Road was created in 1850 when John Hobson set out his new estate, just off the new turnpike road to Glossop. We shall talk about its residents as we walk up the hill to view Hobson's own home, before walking back down to Fulwood Rd.

Taptonville Road was created at the time the suburb of Broomhill was starting to expand away from its origin - Broomhill House. Properties were being developed along the Glossop (turnpike) Road, which made accessibility to them much easier, especially after the buses and trams came out here from the town centre. Houses here were designed for the up and coming middle classes, as evidenced by the new owners and residents. It was nearer to town than Endcliffe Crescent (begun late 1820s), but pre-dates the mansions of Ranmoor which came into being in the 1860s. The original houses we shall see have changed little over the intervening years, with some being Listed properties. Most of the properties are still in private ownership with the notable exception of no. 10 which is the home of the much-loved Broomhill Community Library. We shall also walk around the hidden gem of Taptonville Crescent, and pause to consider why it came into being.
