Explore how children of the past learned about their world through schoolwork, games, toys, and needlework. Discover local history with guided tours, exhibitions, and entry records from the Hitchin British School. Everyone welcome!

We are delighted to welcome you to the British Schools Museum for this year’s Heritage Open Day on the weekend of September 13th-15th. The theme for 2024 is ‘Routes, Networks, and Connections’. We’ll explore how children in the past learned about their world, showcasing items they left behind—from schoolwork to games, toys to needlework. We'll also delve into what they meant to the children and their understanding of a world very different from today's.

Additionally, we’ll display transcripts of entry records from the Hitchin British School, allowing those with local ancestors to trace their family’s origins and subsequent journeys.
