Bob's Lowestoft High Street Blitz Walk
The Lodge, Belle Vue Park, Yarmouth Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk, NR32 4AL
Lowestoft, Britain's most easterly town was targeted by the Germans in both World Wars. During the Great War (1914-1918) Zeppelins, seaplanes and German warships bombarded the town.
In WW2 Lowestoft suffered a bombing ordeal out of all proportion to its size and importance. Between 1940 and 1944, 105 raids took place, bringing about much death and destruction and damage to 75% of the properties in the Borough.
Historian Bob Collis has made a special study of the effect of the wartime attacks. In this special Heritage Market HODs guided "Blitz Walk" Bob uses data from his extensive archives to highlight some of the unfortunate sites wrecked by Hitler's bombs or the Kaiser's shells in time of conflict.
The tour also includes a brief overview of the Lowestoft Town Hall restoration project.
