  • In person

The Altisidora Inn, named for a very famous racehorse in the beautiful East Riding village of Bishop Burton, welcomes you.

The Altisidora is a whitewashed country inn set in a delightful 15th century collection of buildings, and as the East Riding of Yorkshire Council's conservation area report states, the inn is ‘pivotal’ in views of the village. Plenty of parking and disabled access.

Its puzzling name is from a famous Yorkshire chestnut mare called Altisidora, sired by Eclipse, bred and owned by Richard Watt, the lord of Bishop Burton. Altisidora won the classic race St Leger at Doncaster in 1813 after no less than 10 false starts. It was alleged all the villagers had their shirts on her. Altisidora was a miracle horse - bred, trained and raced in Yorkshire, she won 2 of her 3 races as a 2-year-old in 1812, and was unbeaten for the next two seasons, winning 3 races including the St Leger as a 3-year-old and 4 races as a 4-year-old in 1814. In her final season, she won 4 of her 8 races. During her career, she sometimes ran in races on successive days, and on 2 occasions ran 2 races in 1 day. Retired to Bishop Burton as a broodmare, she died aged 15. The inn was formerly called the Horse and Jockey and Evander, after another winning racehorse. Altisidora was the name of a girl in the story Don Quixote.

Visitors may enter freely and look at the many old pictures of Bishop Burton buildings and of horses on the walls and in the private dining room called The Chapel.

At the Altisidora Inn home cooked food is served all day, and you may choose to drink a beer called St Leger.
