Bierley St John the Evangelist - celebrating 200 years as a parish church.

Bierley St John's was built as a private chapel for the Richardson's of Bierley Hall in 1766. It was designed by John Carr, the architect responsible for Harewood House. The church has been adapted to meet the changing needs of the congregation but retains many original features including stone columns and an Italianate bell tower.
In 1824 the chapel was consecrated for public worship and subsequently had a substantial impact on the spiritual and physical well-being of the parish in which it was situated. The church and the associated school were extensively supported by the patronage of Miss Frances Mary Richardson Currer. Parson Bull served the parish between 1826 and 1839 and was prominent in the 10 hours movement in response to the experiences of the working children who attended his Sunday school. The church includes many memorials, including substantial stained glass and the Hillas Memorial organ.
Our heritage open mornings on 7th and 14th September provide an opportunity to look at the church and graveyard and to learn more about the church's past.
As part of our bicentenary year we are eager to collect memories from people who have had past association with the church, please bring along memories and memorabilia for us to record for our archive.
