Beverley The Church of St John of Beverley
5 North Bar Without, Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, HU17 7AG
This Grade II listed building opened in 1898 is located on the corner of York Road and the North Bar. A Catholic chapel was built in Beverley In 1791 and was replaced by a church in 1846. This was the first Catholic Church to be built in Beverley since the Reformation and from here priests went out across East Yorkshire to serve the local population. Built between 1897 and 1898, the church was designed by the architectural firm of Smith, Brodrick & Lowther of Hull and built at a total cost of £1560. Lady Sykes of Sledmere House, wife of Sir Tatton Sykes paid for the construction.
This year for Heritage Open Days there will be a display about St John Fisher (c. 19 October 1469 – 22 June 1535) who was born in Beverley and rose to be a Catholic bishop. Fisher was also an academic and Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. He was executed by order of Henry VIII for refusing to accept him as the supreme head of the Church of England. He was named a cardinal by Pope Pius XI in 1935.
