Beverley St Mary's Church presents teddy bears, parachutes and stories of the white rabbit
St Mary's Church, North Bar Within, Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, HU17 8DL
The beautiful parish church of many centuries, now celebrating significant restorations with new and acclaimed stone carvings. Come and visit the church with your children, we have an exciting programme for them.
This year our theme is pilgrimage. Inside the church is a carving of a rabbit or a hare dressed up as a human pilgrim, with a special bag and a staff. See if you can find him? Not too easy, there are lots of animals carved around this church. On our rabbit’s bag is a symbol for all pilgrims, a scallop shell, which was a souvenir of the most famous of medieval European pilgrimages to the shrine of St James at Santiago de Compostella in northern Spain. There is a legend (unproved) that our rabbit was copied into the Alice in Wonderland books.
On your visit, listen to the story of the new stone carvings of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia characters and also the Women of Influence outside the church; and once inside, look at the ceiling of kings and the painted ceiling bosses which tell many tales.
Young people’s activities from 1300 to 1700.
A teddy bear journey - parachuting from the bell tower at 1345, 1445, 1545, 1645
1700 - for children, the story of white rabbit and the journey to Santiago de Compostella
Bring your (reasonably sized) Teddy Bear and make him/her a parachute so that he/she can fly through the air from the tower to your arms below in the grounds of the church.
