Beverley, no.2 Highgate
2 Highgate, Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, HU17 0DN
The earliest house is known to have been built by the leading 18th century Beverley architect William Middleton, who in April 1759 bought ‘part of the plot where Inglebert Hall formerly stood… on the West side of Londoners Street or Highgate.’ From c.1770/1 to mid 1775, this house was home to the family of Mary Wollstonecraft - described as the original suffragette, author and free thinker, she was a pioneer of women’s rights. 2 Highgate later was owned for decades by the Lamberts, organists to Beverley Minster and St Mary’s. The plain exterior with later Victorian plate glass windows conceals an 18th century interior with stone flagged floors, panelling and an elegant staircase. To the rear was an ancient, perhaps 18th century, Gothick privy.
This is a rare opportunity to see a mid Georgian house virtually unaltered, where Mary Wollstonecraft lived as a child, a woman who grew up to be famous all over the world. No house in which she lived except this one has survived. She is probably the most influential person who ever lived in Beverley, with a growing reputation. Her daughter also Mary married the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, and wrote the novel Frankenstein.
