Beverley Butt Farm World War II Battery
Butt Farm, Victoria Road, Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, HU17 8PJ
Butt Farm Heavy Anti Aircraft Battery was constructed in 1941 and was operational throughout World War II, defending Hull, Beverley and surrounding areas from enemy aerial attack. In excess of 300 military personnel were based here - men of the 62 HAA Regiment and women of the ATS. All were accommodated in Nissen Huts on the site. The Gun Site consists of 4 Gun Emplacements set in an arc around a semi-sunken Command Post. At the end of the War, the Battery was used for training purposes but by the 1950s it was abandoned and became derelict and overgrown with vegetation. Following its recent 're-discovery', an ongoing programme of repair and restoration has been taking place with works also carried out by Historic England who have designated the Gun Site as a Scheduled Monument. The 90 minute Tour will provide a rare opportunity to visit and learn about the purpose and history of what is one of Britain's best remaining examples of a Heavy Anti Aircraft Battery.
