Join our guides to find out all about the Lit & Phil, a Newcastle institution. Explore the library's nooks and crannies and hear fascinating facts from our past, from lightbulbs and Egyptian mummies, to the arrival of the wombat!

The Lit & Phil was founded in 1793 and has been at home on Westgate Road since 1825. The library has more than 200,000 books, historic and contemporary, as well as printed and recorded music and maps. Our experienced guides will take you on a fascinating tour of the building, delving into its history and its association with the great and the good of Tyneside's illustrious heyday: George and Robert Stephenson, Lord Armstrong and Joseph Swan to name only a few.
