Beeston Hill Community Cinema

St Luke’s CARES is a charity in South Leads, we run youth projects and community projects as well as a large charity shop and warehouse on Dewsbury Road. Since moving into our building in 2015 we have always been fascinated by the history of it. It was designed and built in 1911 by Thomas Thompson, and called The Pavilion Picture Palace, one of the first purpose-built cinemas in Leeds. Thomas Thompson was to become one of the most successful film exhibitors of his time. It was a really busy cinema and could seat up to 1000 people. Some of our customers have been able to tell us stories about coming to see films there. One said as a boy they used to stand on the bins at the back and look through the window to watch the film, before being chased away by one of the staff. The cinema closed in 1956. With the help of Leeds Community Foundation and Leeds Civic Trust in 2021 we have been able to reopen the space as a Community Cinema. At our Beeston Hill Community Cinema Open Day we will be presenting pictures, photographs and artefacts relating to our former cinema. A video installation directed and filmed by local artist Tyvin Haque, called “A walk through South Leeds Picture House Past” of a route around our local area taking in the buildings and plots of former cinemas. We also have a large map of Beeston Hill that includes the locations of all the former cinemas in the area. Come along and enjoy a slice of South Leeds cinema history.
