Barton le Street St. Michael’s Church: Ryedale networks and connections. What did the Victorians do for the Street Churches?
St Michael and All Angels Church, Barton le Street, Malton, North Yorkshire, YO17 6PL
Join us at Barton le Street for the second in our series of mini talks and tours in The Street Benefice, Ryedale, focusing on the Victorian restoration of a series of fascinating historic churches, led by Dr Dav Smith, buildings archaeologist from the University of York.
HOD visitors are invited to start by enjoying the facilities of Barton’s Village Hall, including toilets and a free lunch, before making their way to St. Michael’s church for a very special organ recital by internationally-renowned composer and organist, Philip Moore.
A short recital will be followed by a guided tour and talk by the University of York’s buildings detective, Dr Dav Smith who will explain the significance of the church’s Romanesque architecture and explore how the Victorians incorporated over 250 fragments of the earlier church in the rebuilding of the church in 1870-1 and inspired a new generation of craftsmen and conservators under the patronage of the Meynell-Ingram family and Leeds-based architects, Perkin & Son. Dr Smith will also reflect on the ways in which archaeological recording and digital reconstruction assisted in the scholarly study of this church, which led to its upgrading to Grade I Listing in recognition of its national significance.
Saturday 14th September (but the church will be open all day, as it is every day)
