Aysgarth School Chapel and Heritage Tour
Aysgarth School, Newton-le-Willows, Newton-le-Willows, Bedale, North Yorkshire, DL8 1TF
The founding Headmaster, Clement Hales, was a clergyman, so it was never in doubt that his school was to have a chapel. The Chapel was opened by the Lord Bishop of Ripon on 9th June 1891. The pulpit was previously used at Easby Abbey near Richmond. There are three stained glass windows created by Henry Holiday. Two are in memory of Rev Hales' first wife, the other is a memorial to the second Mrs Hales and was donated by her sisters. The East window is in memory of Alexander McMillan who died in the school at the age of ten. There is a magnificent brass lectern in the shape of an eagle. A superb organ provides the music. At the rear of the Chapel are a number of plaques attached to the wall.
In 1915, the original pitch pine seating and panelling was replaced by light oak. A number of items of oak chapel furniture were made by the firm Robert Thompson's of Kilburn.
The Chapel has never previously been open to the public but it is used everyday by the school. We look forward to showing you around the chapel, library, the war memorials and the historic parts of the school.
