The Friends of Newark Town Hall Museum and Art Gallery present 'Art on the Move' in the Spotlight Gallery. Traditional Folk Art began on canal boats in the 1850s and has evolved with styles adapted to modern materials and designs.

Traditional Folk Art is ‘Art on the Move’ and a familiar sight on the residential and holiday boats visiting Newark on the River Trent.
Artist Deborah Hill says ‘Focusing on roses and castles, the designs were painted on the canal boats by families who lived on the boats generally receiving no education and living in extreme poverty. Often, they did not even own the boat they lived on.

The art, painted originally on boats, moved to travellers' caravans in the late 1890s and onwards.
Come and meet Deborah on Saturday 7th September and hear how she creates these distinctive designs and why she loves to remind us of the folk who lived on those boats and whose hard work kept essential goods and services ‘on the move’ on our waterways through the 19th century.
