Ancient Hillfort, Viking Living History village and Chainsaw Artist.

Hunsbury Hill Road, West Hunsbury, Northampton, Northamptonshire, NN4 9UW

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

Hunsbury Hill Country Park houses a 2,500 year-old Iron-age Hillfort. On 7th/8th September a Viking re-enactment group will be in the park showing typical Living History, with battles & ambushes. A Chainsaw Artist will be there on 7th September.

As well as the 2,500-year-old Iron-age Hillfort to discover, a Viking village will be amongst the trees, demonstrating Living History during the 9th and 10th centuries, when Vikings were here in Britain.
There will be ambushes, skirmishes and battles, some involving the younger members of the public! (Don't worry, all is strictly controlled.) A A Viking ship will be here (not in water!) for all to explore, as well.

Our Chainsaw Artist will be demonstrating his skills, sculpting small items, which will be given away via a competition - details to be given on the day!

There is also Northamptonshire Ironstone Railway Trust in the park. Come and see the trains and their museum! (Train-rides may be available, which will NOT be free.)

For those who wish to see the Hillfort, we will have volunteers to show you round and pass on general information concerning this Ancient Monument. There are no relics or constructions to view, but the ramparts and ditch are still here to see.

Come and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the Hillfort, or the sights and sounds of chainsaw sculpting and Viking Living History and fighting!

Refreshments are also available from the café in the park that sells hot and cold food and drinks.

Accessibility details

This is a Country Park and as such has uneven paths and inclines. Access to the Viking village and the ancient Hillfort is amongst trees, which means tree roots and low branches can be a hazard. This is a Country Park and the paths are not smooth and flat. The main pathway is normally good but some smaller paths may have tree roots exposed, with undergrowth close to the walkways. In good weather, all the paths are clear and usable - rain will cause problems, so make sure you have the appropriate clothing.
