Visit the site of Alnwick's 19th century House of Correction. See Alnwick's 19th century courthouse and the prisoners' exercise yard with original wall and windows with bars, still in use for hostel guests - who may come and go as they please!

For over 100 years Alnwick kept its courthouse, its police station and its prison in one place. It is now the Alnwick Youth Hostel.

Externally, the Grade II listed building is little changed from those days. Enter the old front doors with their stone surround and see the building's history portrayed around you. Showing prisoners, some old and dangerous but some young and without hope who ended up in prison hulks before transportation to Australia. In the courthouse, history was made in English law, when minor villains suffered a major injustice that became nationally famous - 'The Edlingham Burglary'. Look in the cobbled courtyard and see where Alnwick's mounted policeman stabled his horse in the 19th century.
