The cemetery which dates back to the 17th century for original burials of the Quakers, was opened as a municipal resting place in 1869. With the town of Middlesbrough being a major port since the 1830s there are ship's Captains, pilots and sailors lost at sea. There are over two hundred war casualties commemorated from conflicts ranging from the Crimean War to the American Civil War and the South African or Boer Wars to the two recent world wars. Theatres served in include Gallipoli, France and Belgium, the north sea and oceans of the world as well as Libya and Palestine. Countries mentioned on headstones include Australia, Russia, South America, China and more. We have sportspeople, craftspeople, artists, soldiers, sailors and air force personnel and military, naval and arial volunteers as well as merchant seamen. We also have many other women and men involved in work, health, civic life and war service too.
