A step back in time: The storied past of St Giles Hill Park
Abbey House, The Broadway, High Street, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 9BE
St Giles Hill has been the setting for important developments in the history of the city and indeed, at times, the country -- from a place of execution at the time of the Norman Conquest, to the location of one of Europe's great Medieval trade fairs in the Middle Ages, and, later, the site of a Victorian Pleasure Garden, designed by one of England's leading landscape architects. Today, the Park at St Giles Hill is a beautiful green space with breathtaking views across the city and a rich stock of trees, plants and local wildlife.
Learn more about the Park's fascinating backstory from noted local historian and horticulturalist Dr Harry Mycock. Dr Mycock chairs a new charity, Friends of St Giles Hill Park, set up in 2023 to help maintain and improve the Park, and raise awareness of its rich history and contribution to our community. The Guided Walk will begin at Abbey Gardens and will proceed up St Giles Hill to the hilltop - participants should expect some steep slopes and stairs and come with comfortable footwear and weather-appropriate clothing.
