An exhibition of the the development of roads and travel and the coaching system with a study of Tuxford, one of the earliest stops on the Great North Road. There will be an illustrated talk on September 15th 2 pm.

Learn about pack horses and pack horse bridges, how roads were established and how the worthies of Retford went to parliament and had the Great North Road diverted! Discover how the coaching system developed. Find out what happened if you were run over by a Mail Coach! See a real Mail Coach. Find out how many of our sayings used today, originated in the coaching days.

Find out the difference between a Posting House and a Post Office. See many of the day-to-day items that were used, this was the world of your ancestors. It was not as romantic as the films lead you to believe!

One minute off the A1 to Tuxford. See the large white building with columns outside the front door on the main road. Turn into Newcastle Street beside the museum and first right under the archway into our free car park.
