A guided walk/talk around Newark's timber framed heritage
Newark Library, London Road Car Park, Balderton Gate, Newark, Nottinghamshire, NG24 1UW
Starting from in front of the Library in Beaumond Gardens the tour will show how the town's timber framed buildings generated the medieval street scene. We will pause along the way to look for the clues which help to identify many of the low-status buildings, now hidden behind more recent brickwork & rendered facades. Time permitting we will examine several of the town's high status timber framed buildings, including 'The Governor's House', 'The Prince Rupert', 'The Queen's Head', 'Henrietta Maria's House' & 'The Old White Hart'; all from street level. The issues of conservation versus preservation will be discussed. It is hoped to arrange special access to inspect the interior of one of these buildings where we plan to examine construction techniques in detail. The process of prefabrication & numbering of the frames in the forest will be discussed. Examples of medieval wall decoration may be spotted. The exact itinerary is dependent on access arrangements & of course on the weather. The walk usually takes at least two hours & sometimes concludes in one of the hostelries mentioned above, where we can be refreshed. Numbers are limited to twenty - so book early. Although the town centre is fairly level, the interiors do involve staircases.

The town centre is fairly level, but with the usual kerbs etc. The most interesting parts of most of the buildings is usually on the upper floors & staircases can be medieval in nature. We usually go close by several toilet opportunities en route. If it rains we usually press on - so be prepared.
