A guided tour - Swindon & GWR - the full story
Designer Outlet main entrance, Kemble Drive, Swindon, Wiltshire, SN2 2DY
In the 1840’s the Great Western Railway chose to site its locomotive repair works in what was open countryside mid-way between Bristol and London, near to the small market town of Swindon. That decision changed Swindon forever. The first railway workers and the generations that followed them forged Swindon’s character and pioneered the town’s evolution into a dynamic and prosperous industrial centre in the south-west of England. Join this guided tour to hear Swindon’s GWR story, one of pioneering ideas, community initiatives and social change.
The Tour follows a circular, mainly flat route of about 2 miles, meeting your guides at the main/Kemble Drive entrance to the Designer Outlet. You will be then be taken through the Tunnel and around the Railway Village to end in the Carriage Works where you will see how this industrial building is currently being re-imagined for the 21st Century as a networking hub to connect start-up organisations in the creative sector.
