A Church for Every Week, a Pub for Every Day - Walking Tour

The Forum, Millennium Plain, Norwich, Norfolk, NR2 1TF

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

We all know the old saying about Norwich, but is it true? Explore some of the city’s churches and pubs and uncover some interesting, often surprising, facts about their history, as well as unearthing some connections with our European neighbours.

This tour aims to put the record straight. We will not have time to visit all the churches and pubs, but we will explore a good selection to uncover some interesting and often surprising facts about them and the wider history of the city. Although in some decline today, pubs and churches were important public spaces where people had gathered for centuries. Pubs and inns had a wide variety of uses – social, cultural, political and as transport hubs. We will encounter pubs where you could have viewed a rattlesnake, a crocodile or an elephant, and pubs with very dark histories. We will see how many churches can be fitted into one street and discover the church of the local pastor and his wife who were the only residents of England to be painted by Rembrandt. While the churches visited are mainly medieval Anglican, we will acknowledge sites used for worship by other faiths that played a part in the city’s social history.
