Sacred Heart Chrch Berkhamsted, Park Street, Hertfordshire, HP4 1HX

  • Available anytime
  • Pre-booking not required

Visitors will learn about the less well-known part of Berkhamsted the West End with poverty and industry but also hidden surprises.

Starting at the Roman Catholic Church the tour passes the former Methodist chapel and sees the parade of shops that replaced the workhouse used until the 1930s. We enter the hamlet of Gossoms End once the poorest part of Berkhamsted but passing the main area of Lane's Nurseries with its extensive orchards and shrubs, filling the canal fields area and fruit trees stretching up the southern slopes. Near to the canal are signs of the once flourishing timber trade, which brought employment to the area and in the once fast flowing chalk stream, the River Bulbourne brought for a century a flourishing watercress industry, which was developed by several local families. We will pass the site of the gas works and the brush factory. We will also learn about the medieval hospital with its healing spring.
