World Healing Centre (2020)

Our Edwardian building was built in 1911 by Jane Higgin who lived next door. At 60 years of age, she married widower Frederick Ash, on 9th December 1911, in London. He was a well-known local photographer with numerous studios in Blackpool, and in towns and cities in the North West. The Blackpool Times reported that they would take up residence at 'Calderbank', the name given to the house. Jane died the following year. A generous benefactor, she made many gifts to churches.

The next occupants we have traced were the Millington family who were certainly there in 1921, probably earlier. Frederick W Millington was a councillor in Blackpool who played a major part in the organisation of the first Blackpool Carnival in 1923. The World Healing Crusade (now World Healing Centre) was founded in 1952 by Mandus Nyquist. Mandus was born in 1907 in Hartlepool, the son of Otto Nyquist, a Norwegian. Brother Mandus, as he was known, appears on the 1954/1955 Electoral Roll at Calderbank with his wife Annie.

After his death in 1988, his son Conrad continued the work. Conrad passed on in 2009. The Charity has a local, national and international outreach. The Centre has now been refurbished and revived for the 21st Century. We have created a warm and relaxing space for the many activities and services that are now available.
