The Mechanics Institute is a grade II* listed building it is best known as the birthplace of the TUC which was founded in the building in 1868, and Manchester's two universities have their roots in the building.

Part of the building is used as a meeting and conference centre, and we will be leading tours of the building that will highlight significant architectural features, the establishment of the Mechanics Institute and the role the building has played since it hosted the meeting that established the Trades Union Congress in 1868.

The tour will include, the Congress Room, which reproduces the style of the meeting room used in 1868, some small displays of historic trade union memorabilia and in our Alcove Room a number of panels that tell the story of a number of our prominent trades unions. In addition, throughout the building there are several contemporary “stained glass” windows celebrating individual trades unions.
