St Mary's Church Newton with Flowery Field (2020)

Bower Court, Newton, Greater Manchester, SK14 4HL

  • Available anytime
  • Pre-booking not required

St Mary’s has been here for the people of Newton for nearly 2 centuries. Find out about the building, and search for ancestors buried in our churchyard. Due to COVID restrictions, the graveyard has a more back to nature look than usual

There will be a detailed leaflet giving the history of the church, highlighting the main features, the organ, pulpit, font etc. alongside information boards giving specific details of the more important features of the church building. Valuable artefacts normally locked away will be on display, alongside the vestments that have been used over the years. Guided tours of the building including the turrets and bell tower will be available on request. We have 16 Commonwealth War Graves and one MOD grave in our graveyard from the 2 world wars and Afghanistan and there will be a trail around these grave and details for each of the graves available to read. Visitors will be able to go up into the bell tower if they wish and can also ring our bell.

Additional information

The church was built in 1839 and is of added architectural interest due to its Romanesque style rather than the Gothic style more commonly seen at that period. The West Tower and Turrets, the Chancel Organ loft, and Vestry were added in 1877, in a similar quality and sympathetic design, with the cost being funded by Public Subscription. The main external feature, and prominent local landmark, the West Tower, with its two turrets, was the subject of a major restoration project in 2011, restoring the historic fabric to its former glory.
