Dukinfield Old Hall Chapel – Romantic Ruin? (2020)
Dukinfield Old Hall Chapel, Greater Manchester, SK16 4RE
In the past, artists, poets, and thinkers, were inspired by ruins in their natural settings. This Chapel is the only building on the Tameside ‘at risk’ list, which has a plan to be a managed ruin. Why should we cherish such a ruin now? Is Nature a threat, or can it enhance or even protect the Chapel?
View the Chapel at a safe distance and see the impact of Nature on the site. See if you identify what grows there.
Hear a short talk on how it evolved into this ruin. Then, share your thoughts on the best plan for this modest Chapel, the oldest surviving building in Dukinfield.
If you wish, follow the example of the Romantics and bring what you need to draw, paint or write, or to create a digital or other piece of work, inspired by the Chapel or the Nature around it.

Visitors must arrive promptly for the starting time, as visitors are escorted onto the site through security gates. The talk will take place on a hard-surfaced area, adjacent to the Chapel site. There is usually ample parking on site. No materials will be supplied so those wanting to create a piece of work must bring their own. Anyone who has difficulty standing for a talk, or who wishes to work sitting down, may bring a camping chair, or something similar, to sit on.
This event is not suitable for young children as the surrounding area is a private commercial site. Older children, who are interested in the event, are welcome under adult supervision.
