Berkhamsted Foundling Hospital- Memories of Childhood (2020)

Ashlyns School, Hertfordshire,

  • Available anytime
  • Pre-booking not required

In this video two former Foundlings will tell us what life was like for the children in Berkhamsted Foundling Hospital 1935-55. Walking round the present Ashlyns School they will recall memories and feelings of those days.

The former Foundlings will tell us of the strict discipline and regimented life and the strict segregation of the boys from the girls. Little was known by the people of Berkhamsted of the children and why they were there, isolated from the town, an isolation which became more severe in the days of WWII. The hospital, now Ashlyns School, was purpose built to replace the London Hospital and to give the children the benefit of country air.

Additional information

This recording was made to provide a permanent record of life in the Berkhamsted Foundling Hospital when there are no longer the Foundlings alive to recall their memories Unlike the Foundling Voices Lottery funded Project these memories are recorded on a tour round the school. The two former Foundlings have done guided tours of Ashlyns School for Berkhamsted HODs which has not been possible this year because of the Pandemic.
