Berkhamsted Place was built by Sir Edward Carey, Keeper of the Queen's Jewels (Elizabeth I), using material from the castle. From the 18th century onwards it was frequently known as The Castle. Although little remains of the mansion itself, the area is rich in history. Tours will include the Great Barn which is even older than the mansion. There will be a small exhibition detailing the history of Berkhamsted Place. There is an important link to Berkhamsted Castle. Although the main house was demolished in 1967, much of interest remains, including evidence of a walled garden.
