This fascinating talk explores the history of the early 19th century public protests known as the 'Swing Riots. Many Barton Stacey men were involved, and the harsh quashing of the movement led to two local men being hanged and many transported!

A talk by Barton Stacey History Group covering the results of its research into the impact of the “Swing Riots”

In the early 1830’s the agricultural landscape was one of deprivation. The corn laws had artificially increased the price of bread, automation was taking away the jobs of farm workers and instead of full time employment workers were employed on a day to day basis (the original zero hours contracts).

Across the country agricultural workers rebelled and the Dever Valley was at the centre of this uprising. Many Barton Stacey men were involved and the establishment was harsh in quashing the movement with two Barton Stacey men hanged and many transported. This talk outlines the background to the events and chronicles some of the Barton Stacey men at the centre of the unrest

Barton Stacey History group was formed in 2013 to preserve existing knowledge and build on this to reach a wider audience in this digital age.
We undertake original research and then present it in easily digestible formats at talks, exhibitions and in pamphlets and booklets.
