The bridge and the lock up date back to the 13th century and were originally noted by John Aubrey as a chapel. It was used as a blindhouse or lock up in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Local historian Ivor Slocombe explains that the chapel was rebuilt in the early 18th century into a single room, and later modified in the 19th century to include 2 secure cells with iron doors and beds.
