Washington F Pit Museum is an iconic landmark that showcases a key part of Sunderland's industrial heritage and the history of the mining industry in the region. The F-Pit Engine House and attached headgear are a Scheduled Ancient Monument and are the only surviving structures of New Washington Colliery, operating as a museum since 1976. The surrounding Albany Park was formed from land reclaimed from the former colliery.
Mosedale Gillatt Architects have recently been appointed to prepare the detailed designs for the refurbishment of the FPit Museum , including a new Heritage Visitor Centre and cafe, and outdoor exhibition space. Work on the first phase of Albany Park improvements has already begun with further enhancements including new street furniture, lighting, informal play and recreational facilities planned.
Come along on Saturday 14th September between 12-3pm to learn more about the plans for this unique heritage site. The Engine House will be open to visitors to explore.
The Coal Face Washington exhibition showcases local mining heritage with portraiture by photographer Andy Martin and poetry by Dr Louise Powell, exploring what it means to have a connection to Washington’s mines beyond work. What was it like to be married to a man who earned his living in a dangerous environment? What did it mean to be the child of a miner? and how does it feel to have mining heritage now the collieries have closed. Funded by Arts Council England, on show 2nd - 30th Sept 12-3pm

Our meet the architect event is on the ground floor, and wheelchair accessible. The rest of the building has stepped access, no lift.
