Underbank Chapel - our 'roots' and the routes to becoming a Unitarian Chapel

Stannington Road, Stannington, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S6 6AP

  • 15 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

A dramatically presented Sunday Heritage Service highlighting the controversial 'route' to becoming a Unitarian Chapel, followed by the opportunity to browse displays featuring connections past and present.

Our Open Day begins with the Heritage service in Chapel at 11.00am. Please feel free to attend, we welcome “people of all faiths and none". We love to present our history in a dramatic and comedic way so this will not be a usual Sunday service! It will highlight the roots of our Chapel and Unitarianism and the controversial routes taken by those wishing to break from the Church of England in previous centuries. Afterwards, the Chapel and Schoolroom will be open until 3.00pm. On show will be displays from the 372 years of our history including some old documents recently found after being missing for over 40 years, including the original parchment Will from May 1652, that enabled our congregation to begin. Our connections to other faiths and the range of groups within Unitarianism will show how Unitarians continue to campaign on important issues: climate change, social justice, peace and the rights of LGBTQ+ people. Our old registers will be available if you wish to trace your ancestors or find a relative’s grave. We have two Commonwealth War Graves in the graveyard with accompanying information about the young men who served and died in WWI. You can hear our old pipe organ being played in the chapel and enjoy refreshments in the Victorian Schoolroom. There is a Children’s Trail to follow and activities for children in the Schoolroom.

Accessibility details

A sloping path from the road leads to steps, onto another slightly sloping path towards the chapel door. There is a handrail at either side of the steps. A ramp can be put at the door. Paths are old and slightly uneven. Further along, beside the cottage, is another sloping path with a few steps which are not as high as the others - this can be used to get to the chapel. Staff will be on hand to help. The upstairs balcony has steep, narrow steps and cannot be accessed by wheelchairs, mobility walkers or prams. The Schoolroom has a ramp and is all on one level.

Additional information

There is free roadside parking on both sides of Stannington Road, opposite the Chapel. There are no designated Disabled parking spaces but we can put cones out to reserve a space close to the chapel entrance path. We kindly ask visitors not to park on the bend in the road outside the chapel, opposite the Low Riggs Road entrance as this causes a restricted view for vehicles coming up the hill.
