An exhibition about the history of Henry Thorne's confectioners.

This exhibition explores the relationship between Henry Thorne & Co. Ltd. of Leeds, the Woodhead family of Chesterfield and the firm E. Woodhead & Sons Ltd. The Quaker Thorne family moved to Leeds around 1830 and Henry established his business on Cheapside. Thorne’s, originally a mustard and chicory manufacturer, moved into cocoa and, later, confectionery production, becoming famed for their Spot the dog logo. The Woodhead family of Chesterfield were tea and coffee specialists and grocers, and also ran several cafes. Three generations of the Woodhead family were extremely influential in Thorne’s, building a strong Chesterfield link with confectionery manufacturing in Leeds.
Items displayed are from the library’s archive and a private Thorne’s collection.

To accompany this exhibition a talk will talk place on Thorne’s of Leeds and its Chesterfield connections on 5 September at 1pm.
