St Peter's Church, Hall Green
Highfield Road, Hall Green, Birmingham, West Midlands, B28 0BT
The church, now recognised as a Grade 2 building of significant architectural interest, was constructed in 1964. It features an octagonal shape and is crowned by a single span of concrete forming a dome.
All the windows in the church, including this one, were designed by Tristan Ruhlmann from Alsace, France. St Peter's Church is the only example of his work other than in Alsace. Ruhlmann's unique design incorporates pieces of stained glass set into concrete panels.
The East Window is particularly impressive and inspired by a passage from St. John’s Gospel, where the risen Jesus tells St. Peter, "Feed my sheep."
Additionally, the church boasts twelve "carpet windows," which depict ancient prayer mats similar to those hung in open windows of early churches. Islamic designs from Turkey also inspire these windows and feature slightly wavy edges to symbolise movement in the wind.
There will be an exhibition of other works by Tristan Ruhlmann in church.
