St Peter's C of E Church, Parr
St Peter;s Church, Broad Oak Road, Parr, St. Helens, Merseyside, WA9 2EN
The church was re-ordered during 2017-2020. The main body of the church was sympathetically modernised so that it was fit for purpose for 21st century worship and community use. Rickety fixed pews were replaced with comfortable moveable chairs, a broken obsolete heating system was replaced by an efficient underfloor heating system. The lighting system was replaced by one that is energy efficient and which gives much better lighting. A modern audio/visual system was installed. We have a modern commercial grade kitchen, there are two toilets which have disabled and baby-changing facilities in them, and also a meeting room which can be divided into two if necessary - in short we have within a Victorian building a modern 21st century church. The one area of the church building that was not changed but just redecorated and new lighting installed was the chancel, ensuring we kept the WW1 Memorial screen (which divides the main body of the church from the chancel), the holy table, and an 1867 Father Willis organ. The WW1 Memorial screen lists 175 men who died in the war, and there is also on the wall to the side of the screen a plaque commemorating those men who died in WW2. All the names on both screens have been researched and the results displayed during Heritage Open Days.
There are two large graveyards - one behind the church (dating from 1864) and one to the side of the church - both are free to explore but with caution.
