Norman church with a modern stained glass Nativity window designed by John Piper.

Iffley Church is not only a sumptuous and almost unaltered Romanesque building, standing above the River Thames just 3km downstream from Folly Bridge and surrounded by ancient farmhouses and fields. It is also a place of extraordinary beauty and peace. Visitors can walk and picnic in the Glebe Field and visit St Mary’s Church. The church has clearly been loved and cared for throughout its 860-year history. People of all ages are awed by its massive architecture, torrents of carved stones and curious, thought-provoking detail.

The new pilgrimage route, St Frideswide’s Way, launched in June. It follows the Thames Path and passes close to Iffley Church. The church’s heritage programme is focusing this year on the 12th century when the church was built. It opened in May with talks about Oxford in 1160: Scholars and Pilgrims at St Frideswide’s Priory. A virtual tour of Iffley Church is presented by volunteers on https://livingstonesiffley.org.uk/informal-tour Comments include, ‘We loved all the different voices. [The tour] really demonstrates how many facets there are to this special church, and how many people are connected with it, both past and present.’
