St Mary in the Baum Church, Rochdale

4-6 St. Marys Gate, Rochdale, Lancashire, OL16 1DZ

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

Today's Church built in 1910 and consecrated in 1911 was designed by the eminent Scottish church architect Sir John Ninian Comper with a stunning stained glass East window and rood screen. Also, featuring windows from the original church of 1742.

Baum (Rochdale dialect for 'balm') refers to the wild flowers which grew in the meadows where the church was built, was thought to be Lemon Balm (Melissa Officinalis) or White Mint.

The church has sometimes wrongly been called ‘St Mary, the Baum’ as if some attribute of Our Lady. Strangely, it has also been wrongly referred to as 'St Mary le Baum' a rare instance of Franglais from the Lancashire mill town.

St Mary in the Baum, on St Mary's Gate, was founded in 1742 as a chapel of ease to minister to the people living north of the River Roch.
Stained glass windows, the pulpit and the font have been retained from the original church, as well as a set of stone pillars.

The Church is only one of three Grade 1 Listed buildings in Rochdale - a real 'hidden gem.'
