St. Alphege Church Solihull Open Day

St. Alphege hoped to join HODs for the church’s 800th anniversary, but Covid prevented that. After an interregnum, we now have a new Rector who is very keen to reach out to the whole local community and holding a church open day coinciding with national HODs seemed an ideal opportunity. The church has architecture from the Early Thirteenth to the Sixteenth Centuries, including an unusual two-storey chapel, a chantry above an unspoilt crypt chapel where the priest lived, which is complete with fireplace and easily barred Medieval door. There is also some fine Nineteenth and Twentieth Century stained-glass, but sadly only fragments of the medieval glass and wall-paintings survive. The pulpit and altar rails are excellent examples of Stuart era woodwork.
